The Best Packing Hack for Traveling With Young Kids

Traveling with young kids can be magical, exciting… and just a little bit chaotic.

When I went to Disney World with children aged 2, 8, and 10, I quickly realized that packing the right clothes was only half the battle. The real challenge started every morning—finding everyone's clothes, making sure nobody forgot socks or underwear, and somehow getting out the hotel room before lunchtime!

That's when I started using one of my all-time favorite family travel hacks: packing one complete outfit for each day in its own labeled pouch.

It sounds simple (because it is!), but it completely changed our mornings at Disney.

Pack One Complete Outfit for Each Day

Instead of packing all the shirts together, all the shorts together, and all the socks in another section of the suitcase, I prepare one pouch for every day of our trip.

Each pouch contains everything my child needs for that day:

• Shirt
• Shorts, pants, or skirt
• Underwear
• Socks

Matching accessories if needed

A sweater or light jacket when appropriate

Then I simply label each pouch.

You can use:

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday...

or

Day 1, Day 2, Day 3...

If you're visiting Disney, you can even make them more fun:

• Magic Kingdom
• EPCOT
• Animal Kingdom
• Hollywood Studios
• Pool Day

It's especially useful if you've planned matching Disney outfits or specific clothes for each park.

My DIY Version... I Still Don't Know How I Found the Time!

Here's a funny confession...

When my kids were little, I actually sewed all of my packing pouches by hand.

Looking back, I honestly have no idea where I found the time! 😂

Between work, three kids, laundry, and getting ready for a vacation, somehow I thought sewing custom travel pouches sounded like a good idea.

Today, I would absolutely buy packing cubes instead!

Sometimes I look back and wonder if I secretly had 30-hour days back then.

No Packing Cubes? No Problem!

If you don't own packing cubes, don't let that stop you.

Large Ziploc bags work surprisingly well and let you see exactly what's inside.

They're inexpensive and easy to label with a permanent marker.

That said, I personally prefer reusable packing pouches or packing cubes because they're much more environmentally friendly. If your family travels regularly, they're definitely worth the investment.

Why This Packing Method Works So Well

The biggest advantage?

Nobody has to dig through the suitcase every single morning.

No more searching for the missing sock that somehow disappeared overnight.

No more pulling every piece of clothing out of the suitcase just to find today's shorts.

Everything is already together.

The kids simply grab the pouch labeled for that day, unzip it, and get dressed.

Even younger children can participate, while older kids become completely independent.

Meanwhile, you can focus on getting yourself ready, filling the water bottles, packing the snacks... and maybe even drinking your coffee while it's still hot.

(Okay... maybe that's asking a little too much.)

Pack the Pouches Vertically

One of my favorite tricks is placing all the pouches vertically inside the suitcase, almost like files inside a filing cabinet.

This keeps everything perfectly organized and lets you pull out just one day's outfit without disturbing the rest of the suitcase.

It's incredibly satisfying—and honestly makes packing feel much less stressful.

Let the Kids Help

Before the trip, I like letting the kids help choose their outfits.

We build one complete outfit for each day together before placing it into its pouch.

Not only does this save time later, but it also avoids those famous vacation arguments like:

"I don't want to wear that shirt!"

Or...

"I haven't liked these shorts since last Tuesday!"

Giving them a little choice before the trip makes everyone happier once vacation begins.

Always Pack One Extra Outfit

Kids are wonderfully unpredictable.

Ice cream melts.

Juice spills.

Water rides are much wetter than expected.

Someone falls into a puddle.

And somehow, the child who never needs a change of clothes suddenly needs three.

I always prepare one extra pouch labeled Extra Outfit.

For toddlers, I also keep one complete outfit inside our park backpack just in case.

Trust me—you'll thank yourself later.

Reuse the Empty Pouches

At the end of each day, I simply place the dirty clothes back into that day's empty pouch.

It keeps clean and dirty clothes separated, and unpacking at home becomes so much easier.

Instead of sorting clothes after vacation, you can practically dump everything straight into the washing machine.

A Small Hack That Makes a Huge Difference

Packing complete daily outfits may seem like a tiny detail, but it completely transformed our family vacations.

The suitcase stays organized.

The kids know exactly what to wear.

Everyone becomes more independent.

And mornings—especially busy Disney mornings—become so much less stressful.

This simple trick worked incredibly well during our Disney World trip with children aged 2, 8, and 10, and it's something I still recommend to every family traveling with young kids.

Because family vacations will never be completely stress-free...

…but an organized suitcase is a pretty amazing place to start.
